In 1950, communist China invaded Tibet. It’s the beginning of a “cultural genocide” and the exodus of thousands of Tibetans.
Today, this people and its unique culture are threatened with extinction in their own land.
For half a century, to struggle for a free Tibet and for the survival of its identity is the never ending challenge of the Tibetan exiled community in India. At present, all hope lies in the educated youths.
But how can one exist facing the economic interests of the modern world?
In 1959, in the footsteps of their spiritual and temporal leader, the 14th Dalaï Lama, thousands of Tibetans crossed the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas, on foot.
Nearly 50 years later, many Tibetans, the majority of whom are children, continue fleeing Tibet, risking their lives. Crossing the mountains, they attempt to reach Nepal, and finally Dharamsala in India, headquarters of the Tibetan government in exile.
The latter has created a real Tibetan micro society to greet and organize the lives of the 100 000 refugees. A structure whose aim is to preserve their identity and culture.
From Tibetan schools to the institute of performing arts, from numerous monasteries to the refugee camps...it’s a journey which carries us from the borders of Tibet to the south of India. This film allows us to share the life and struggle of the Tibetan people in exile.
After half a century of exile and struggle, what is the situation today?
Through unique speeches given by the Dalaï Lama, and deeply moving accounts of a child, a political prisoner, an opera teacher, students....the courage, the fears and hopes of a people are revealed to us.
The threat posed by China is increased by that from the west. Will they resist? |
